Liszt has written the Christmas Tree suite for one of his granddaughters particularly close to him, the very talented pianist, Daniela von Bülow.
The larger part of the work was written during the period between 1874 and 1876; however, later he also had the opportunity to make some corrections. He first mentioned the suite in 1874, in a letter to Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein: „(the pieces) are not going to be festive or of scientific value; rather the simple echoes of my juvenile feelings, staying with me indelibly through all the hardships over the years.”
On Balázs Fülei’s new CD, beyond the nearly three-quarters of an hour long Christmas Tree suite, there are two other great works as well: the Ave Maria and the Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solutide, often played by Liszt among his friends.
